Growing up, I was often dissatisfied with my teachers in school. I always enjoyed asking questions that challenged what I was being taught. Most of my teachers didn't enjoy that challenge as much as I did. So when it came time to choose a major in college, I drew inspiration from those teachers. I decided I would become the teacher I always wanted as a student: a teacher who welcomed and celebrated inquiry of all kinds.
I saw early success as a teacher, engaging the most "difficult" students by welcoming their challenges and coaching them through them. By indulging, rather than stifling my students' natural curiosity, I was able to let students guide their own learning. This led to high levels of engagement and a sharp rise in state test pass rates. In 2014, I was selected as an Indiana State Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist.
In 2015, I moved to adult education and assisted with the start-up of brand-new school from the ground up. I took over as School Director in 2016 and used the same empowerment approach I used in the classroom with my team of teachers and staff. Many of those teachers and staff have since moved on to leadership roles, themselves, earning promotions or are leading their own schools, businesses, and non-profits. Because of our agile and innovative culture, we were able to spend less money on supplies, turnover, and unnecessary work to achieve success on a lean budget.
Through our collaborative approach, my team and I led the school to a state and federal grade of an 'A' in the 2018-19 school year. All while managing facilities and budget, paying off $1.3M of debt from building construction and renovation after just four years of operation.
In that time, my wife and I had twins. Soon after I began work on a Master's Degree in Management and Leadership. Navigating fatherhood while studying leadership highlighted the importance of strong leadership - and the complications that fester in its absence. Through this lens, I focused on developing and outlining my unique approach to empowering people. This approach became the foundation for Curiosity LLC's mission, values, and approach which focus on empowering people to let intrigue guide their work, creating a passionate, dedicated workforce.

Today, people report feelings of anxiety more than ever before. Though it is important we understand and validate those feelings, it is more important that we realize how to overcome them. Particpating in pragmatic, objective-driven, collaborative work helps melt away anxiety and produce long-term results.
Humor not only promotes a more joyful work experience, but can also be used as a tool for uncovering uncomfortable truths. Used carefully, humor can help us speak truth in uncomfortable situations, leading to more comprehensive analysis of difficult problems.
